Petra Lilja Design Gallery fall program

The seminar series Design Research in the Gallery will explore this, materially, verbally and in action during 2016. The invited design researchers will do talks, workshops, installations or activist-events open to the public. By facilitating these meetings the aim is knowledge making and creative exchange between the participants / visitors.

Going into the second part of the seminar series Design Research in the Gallery, it can be confirmed that the aim of knowledge-making and creative exchange have been successfully met in the first five seminars. During the fall of 2016 the series will continue to explore the junction between design research,  the gallery and the home – materially, verbally and in action, through the work of four new researchers.

The series starts on September 4th with Gunnel Pettersson, artist and senior lecturer at the School of arts and Communication (K3) at Malmö University. Link for more detailed information.

Exhibition during Stockholm Design Week 2016

1+1+1 is an experimental collaboration between established designers from three Nordic countries – Hugdetta from Iceland, Petra Lilja from Sweden and Aalto+Aalto from Finland.
During Stockholm Design Week the group launched their third volume – a collection of mirrors at Il Caffe Söder, February 9-13, Tue-Fri 8-10, Sat 9-19.
The 1+1+1 project examines and re-imagines objects by having each studio design an object consisting of three distinct parts and then mixing the parts up into unpredictable combinations.
1+1+1 is a rare kind of collaboration with no compromises as each studio designs their objects according to their own philosophy. Combining the different parts into new combinations is an almost brutally concrete form of cooperation.

Hjemelighed – exhibition in Copenhagen

As a guest exhibitor, Petra Lilja showed three objects made from straw at the the exhibition Hjemelighed in Copenhagen. The exhibition brought together various artists, designers and crafts people during the biannual craft event Kunsthåndverksbiennalen in town.

The straw objects are a touch down in Petra’s phase of getting to know straw as material. Part of the research was the discovery of the hanging mobiles called “oro” (worry), an old traditional model common in farm houses in the south of Sweden in the 19th Century. In her experimentation, Petra’s aim is to combine the straw with contemporary methods, techniques or material to find new expressions and suggest contemporary usage of this traditional material.

Emerging Tendencies in Scandinavian Design

The exhibition Emerging Tendencies in Scandinavian Design is an exhibition curated by Swedish designer and curator Petra Lilja. In cooperation with the Embassies of Sweden and Finland in Romania, the exhibition is displayed during the Romanian Design Week, an annual event in Bucharest that promote design and architecture. May 16th to 24th, 2015.

The exhibition shows a selection of design objects that represent three strong tendencies in the contemporary Scandinavian design scene: designers working with small-scale and artisan production, designers working conceptually rather than commercially and designers that bring together social commenting with design at the frontier of art.

Many of the emerging designers of Sweden and Finland are interested in contemporary artisanship and although their work honor craft and reflect it’s traditional values it also seeks new meaning of it’s own.

– As a curator, I’m interested in bringing these tendencies forward in order to inspire designers, producers and consumers. The storytelling behind the objects reveals the thinking and making of products and make them more than just materials and shapes. By using local resources of production and materials the designer has the potential to create unique design, full of stories – one way forward towards a sustainable future, says Petra Lilja.

Designers: Aalto+Aalto (FI), Andréason & Leibel (SE), Company (FI), Daniel Svahn (SE) Folkform (SE), Jenny Nordberg (SE), Anu Penttinen (FI), Kristoffer Sundin (SE), Lisa Hilland (SE), Louise Hederström (SE), Minna Palmqvist (SE/FI), Som Supawan (SE), Stina Löfgren (SE)

Emerging Tendencies in Scandinavian Design is made possible by the collaboration between Petra Lilja, The Embassy of Sweden in Bucharest, The Embassy of Finland in Bucharest, The Institute and Fiskars.

Design March again!

Designer Petra Lilja exhibited at Design March, Reykjavik, Iceland for the third year in a row. March 12th-15th, 2015. This time in the exciting project 1+1+1 by five Nordic designers.

1+1+1 is an ongoing, experimental collaboration between designers from three countries. Hugdetta from Iceland, Petra Lilja from Sweden and Aalto+Aalto from Finland have all designed a table or floor lamp consisting of three separate parts – a pedestal, a leg and a shade. Although the points where one part joins into another have been decided on together, each design remained a complete mystery to the others until the group meet up in Reykjavik for the Design March festival. The lamps where mixed up together and exhibited at Hotel Alda, March 12th-15th. It was be unpredictable, probably awesome, possibly a catastrophe – but the revealed end-results where a success. All five designers are very happy about the interesting process and 1+1+1 will tour the design weeks of Helsinki and Stockholm during the following year. For each new venue, a new object in three parts and 27 combinations will be designed, ending up with a Nordic mash up collection of objects.
