Mineral Walks
Can we understand materials in another way, beyond natural resources to be exploited? Can we find common ground between ourselves and other-than-humans like for example rocks, stones and minerals?
Mineral Walks are attempts to explore this common ground, collapsing the boundaries between human and nature, living and nonliving. The location shown in these photographs and film, is the old limestone quarry in Limhamn, Sweden, A place that holds narratives of industrial history, geology, ecology and philosophy. In this walk, the figure of the limestone mineral is the main character, guiding the participants through deep time, and between micro and macro scales.
Mineral Walk is an activity part of Petra Lilja’s PhD research project Mineral Mattering(s). In this work, she is collaborating with Danish designer Anette Væring and together, they create site-specific Mineral Walks in different locations. For example, in collaboration with Munkerup Art Museum, Denmark they created a 3 hour long, unique walk for the sculpture park and along the geologically interesting beach in Munkerup.
